About the Film
Chinlone is the traditional sport of Myanmar with a rich 1,500-year history. Unlike any sport you know, it has no opposing team, no winners, and no losers. Instead, a single team forms a circle, working in unison to keep a woven rattan ball airborne using their feet and knees. It is an artistic pursuit where players strive for peak aesthetic form through intricate footwork — blending elements of dance, sport, martial art, and meditation. This beautiful sport is practiced passionately across Myanmar by men, women, the elderly, and young children alike.
This documentary follows the extraordinary journey of Canadian artist Greg Hamilton. Captivated by the magic of chinlone, he spends years learning from master players, and discovering a profound sense of self, community, and love through the game.
Why This Film Resonates Across Disciplines
This is a deeply personal story — one man's more than two-decade journey into the heart of Myanmar, driven by a passion for a sport unlike any other, and transformed by the community that welcomed him. Your students will witness persistence, humility, and the quiet power of showing up — again and again — for something you love.
This film offers rich material across multiple disciplines — each providing a unique entry point for discussion, analysis, and reflection:
- Anthropology & Cultural Studies: An intimate view of Burmese culture, communal ritual, and the social fabric of village life.
- Asian Studies & Southeast Asian History: A window into a historically isolated region — its traditions, festivals, and daily life.
- Sociology of Sport & Performance: A rare case study of a non-competitive team sport where cooperation replaces opposition — and how this challenges conventional ideas about athletic culture.
- Buddhist Philosophy & Meditation in Motion: Loving-Kindness (Metta), Jhana, collective flow, and mindfulness.
- Gender Studies: An exploration of how men and women play together at the highest levels of the game. The film features Su Su Hlaing, an extraordinary solo performer and team player, who speaks about how different qualities of patience shape the development of solo skills.
- Philosophy of Sport & Play: An exploration of what sport means when winning is not the goal. The film raises questions about the nature of play, competition, and the pursuit of excellence without rivalry.
